Italian president Giorgio Napolitano resigns

FXStreet (London) - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano has submitted a resignation letter, according to a statement issued by his office.

Napolitano, 89 and Italy’s longest-serving president agreed to serve for an unprecedented send term after 2013 elections resulted in a hung parliament. Rumours of Napolitano’s impending resignation had long been circulating owing to old age and his initial reluctance to resume his position for a second term.

Following Napolitano’s resignation, Italy’s delegates must meet within the next 15 days to deliberate and vote on his successor. : Senate Speaker Pietro Grasso will act as head of state in the interregnum.

European Central Bank president Mario Draghi is one of the possible candidates tipped for the top job, but the central bank chief may feel he has unfinished business at the ECB. Other candidates include former Prime Minister Romano Prodi and Bank of Italy governor Ignazio Visco.

The single currency remained little changed against the British pound, after upbeat Euro zone industrial production data.
